Yeast Infections

Yeast infections occur when levels of Candida yeast in the vagina grow too high, and cause itching, discomfort and/or vaginal discharge. While this yeast typically lives in the vaginal area in low numbers, when too many Candida cells form it becomes a problem. Yeast infections are not serious, and there is no cause for great concern if you develop one.1
The symptoms of a yeast infection may include itching, soreness or painful sexual intercourse, a rash on or around the vaginal area, clumpy white discharge and painful urination. If your symptoms are accompanied by a fever, unpleasant odor, nausea or back pain, you may have something more serious than a yeast infection.2

Treating Yeast Infections

If you have never experienced a yeast infection in the past, or if you are carrying a baby, it is important to visit your doctor if you exhibit signs of a yeast infection. If you are familiar with the symptoms of a yeast infection and are not pregnant, you can treat it yourself with an over-the-counter cream or suppository.1
Yeast infections may be prevented by taking certain precautions. It helps to avoid tightly fitting pants, wear breathable fabrics, stay away from douches and take off wet swimwear as soon as you are able. You should also avoid taking baths or using hot tubs if you are prone to yeast infections.
